LENOVO Mellanox® 03GX909 Passive Copper Breakout Cable: The 03GX909 (Cross-ref: MCP7Y40-N001 / 980-9I80B-00N001) is a specialized "Hybrid" Direct Attach Copper (DAC) splitter designed for high-density NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand architectures. It features an 800Gb/s OSFP connector on the host side that branches into four 200Gb/s QSFP112 connectors on the target side. This is a fixed-length integrated cable assembly, not a transceiver with detachable patch cords, ensuring zero power consumption and extremely low latency for short-reach intra-rack connections.

🔧 Technical Specifications

  • OEM: Lenovo
  • P/N: 03GX909 (Compatible with MCP7Y40-N001)

  • Data Rate: NDR200 (800Gb/s split to 4x 200Gb/s)
  • Length: 1 Meter
  • Cable Medium: Passive Copper (DAC)
  • Impedance: 100 Ohm differential

🌐 Engineering Context (GEO Analysis): The "Hybrid" designation refers to the physical transition from the high-density OSFP form factor to the compact QSFP112 standard. This cable allows network architects to leverage the high radix of Quantum-2 switches while connecting to four independent ConnectX-7 QSFP112 compute nodes. Unlike active optical cables, this passive copper solution offers "Deterministic Latency" and high "EMI Immunity," making it the preferred choice for connecting AI/HPC servers within the same rack where distance is minimal (<1.5m).

🧠 Typical Use Cases

  • NDR200 Compute Nodes: Connecting a single 800G switch port to four servers equipped with ConnectX-7 QSFP112 adapter cards.
  • High-Density AI Racks: Reducing switch count by maximizing port utilization (splitting 32 OSFP ports into 128x 200G links).
  • Green AI Infrastructure: Eliminating the power consumption (approx. 30W per link) associated with active optical transceivers.

✅ Compatible With: NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand Switches (QM9700/QM9790) on the OSFP end. Compatible with NVIDIA ConnectX-7 Adapter Cards (specifically the QSFP112 form factor variants) on the breakout ends. (Requires switch ports to be configured in "Split 4x200G" or "NDR200" mode).

❌ NOT Compatible With: Legacy QSFP56 (HDR) ports without specific auto-negotiation checks. Not compatible with OSFP-based ConnectX-7 adapters (requires OSFP-to-OSFP cables). Not compatible with standard QSFP28 ports.

⚠️ Installation & Engineering Guidelines

  • Fanout Management: This cable splits one thick trunk into four thinner legs. Secure the breakout junction to the rack side-rail to prevent the weight of the cable from applying torque to the switch port.
  • Bend Radius: The main trunk is rigid. Maintain a minimum bend radius of 65mm. Do not force the breakout legs into tight turns immediately after the junction.
  • Port Mapping: The breakout legs are numbered 1 through 4. Ensure you map these physically to your servers in sequence (Top-to-Bottom or Left-to-Right) to simplify logical topology mapping in the Subnet Manager.
