Identity & Definition
The NVIDIA Mellanox MHQH29C-XTR is a dual-port VPI (Virtual Protocol Interconnect) network adapter in the enterprise network interface card (NIC) category. Based on the ConnectX-2 ASIC, each QSFP port can be independently configured for InfiniBand QDR (40 Gb/s) or 10GbE Ethernet over a PCIe 2.0 x8 host interface. This is a legacy-generation adapter. Condition: Refurbished.
Engineering Context
The ConnectX-2 VPI allows each port to operate as either InfiniBand or Ethernet, configured at driver load time via mlx4 driver parameters. In InfiniBand mode, each port delivers QDR (40 Gb/s) using 4x 10 Gb/s lanes, or DDR (20 Gb/s) using 4x 5 Gb/s lanes. In Ethernet mode, each port operates at 10GbE. The PCIe 2.0 x8 interface provides approximately 40 Gb/s host bus bandwidth. ConnectX-2 supports native InfiniBand RDMA, RoCE for Ethernet, and SR-IOV. This generation has been superseded by ConnectX-5/6/7.
Deployment & Use Cases
Legacy HPC clusters maintaining QDR InfiniBand infrastructure with MPI-based parallel computing. Mixed InfiniBand/Ethernet environments requiring per-port protocol flexibility without separate adapter cards. Budget-conscious deployments where QDR bandwidth is sufficient. Lab and test environments for InfiniBand protocol development and driver testing.

Compatibility & Hard Constraints
Legacy generation — ConnectX-2 is end-of-life. Driver support in newer OS versions may be limited (mlx4 driver). Verify driver availability for your target OS before deployment. QDR maximum — InfiniBand speed is limited to QDR (40 Gb/s). Not compatible with FDR, EDR, HDR, or NDR fabrics at native speeds. FDR/EDR switches may accept QDR connections via backward compatibility at reduced speed. QSFP ports accept original QSFP cables/transceivers (not QSFP+, QSFP28, or QSFP56). PCIe 2.0 x8 — will function in PCIe 3.0/4.0 slots but is limited to PCIe 2.0 bandwidth. Predecessor: ConnectX (SDR/DDR). Successor: ConnectX-3 (FDR/40GbE).
