Identity & Definition

This passive copper fanout breakout cable, the NVIDIA Mellanox MCP7Y40-N003 (NVIDIA P/N 980-9I75R-00N003), converts a single 800 Gb/s OSFP InfiniBand NDR switch port into four independent 200 Gb/s QSFP112 NDR200 downlinks over a 3-meter LSZH assembly. It is a 1-to-4 hydra-style fanout DAC (direct attach cable), not a trunk cable or an aggregation uplink. The MCP7Y40-N003 operates exclusively in InfiniBand NDR/NDR200 mode and does not support Ethernet. NDR200 (QSFP112, 2x100G PAM4 lanes) is electrically incompatible with HDR 200G (QSFP56, 4x50G NRZ lanes) despite the shared "200G" headline speed. This is a refurbished unit, tested and verified by T.E.S IT-SOLUTIONS.

Engineering Context

The OSFP 800G NDR interface carries 8x100 Gb/s PAM4 lanes. The MCP7Y40-N003 splits these into four groups of 2x100G, delivering 200 Gb/s per QSFP112 leg with perfect lane symmetry. As a passive copper cable with LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) jacket, it introduces sub-microsecond latency and draws zero power. At 3 meters this cable operates at the upper physical limit of passive copper for NDR200 PAM4 signaling — proper routing with straight cable paths and strain relief at the OSFP head and Y-junction is essential. The black pulltab identifies the OSFP end.

Deployment & Use Cases

Leaf-to-compute fanout in InfiniBand NDR fabrics connecting Quantum-2 NDR switches to four ConnectX-7 compute or GPU accelerator nodes per switch port. High-density AI training clusters where a 32-port 800G switch can serve 128 NDR200 endpoints using fanout cables. Pod-scale and rack-scale NDR200 deployments in HPC environments. Cross-rack fan-out scenarios where 1–2 meter DACs are too short but active optics are not required.

Compatibility & Hard Constraints

The OSFP end of the MCP7Y40-N003 connects to NVIDIA Quantum-2 NDR switches with OSFP 800G ports. The four QSFP112 ends connect to NDR200-capable endpoints such as ConnectX-7 InfiniBand adapters. This cable is NOT compatible with HDR (QSFP56) devices — NDR200 and HDR use different lane structures and connectors. It is NOT compatible with Ethernet QSFP-DD or 400GbE equipment. It does NOT support any non-InfiniBand system. 3 meters is the upper safe limit for passive NDR200 copper; for longer distances or poorly managed cable routes, active copper (ACC) or active optical cables (AOC) should be used instead. For shorter reaches, the MCP7Y40-N001 (1m) and MCP7Y40-N002 (2m) variants are available.
